Broadly speaking, the rapid and ever advancing technology of CCTV cameras means that the casing styles outlined below will do a similar job.
There will be a plethora of features and options available within our HIK cameras whether it is styled as a Bullet, Dome or Turret and all can be tailored to suit specific situations.
The term PTZ is slightly different as it refers more to the functionality of this type of camera rather than its style per se. PTZ cameras are a more dynamic surveillance device that offer comprehensive coverage with their ability to pan (move horizontally), tilt (move vertically) and also zoom in on specific areas or subjects.
Ultimately each customer will have their own preference and the information below is simply intended to offer a general overview of each style.
Bullet
- The more conventional and most recognisable camera shape.
- Bullets are an obvious visual deterrent and will clearly demonstrate that your premises are under surveillance.
- Can be installed with protective casings to shield the camera from the elements and dust/dirt etc.
- Can be more susceptible to vandalism and tampering.
- Ideal for outdoor applications. Often seen positioned up on high watching over car roads, car parks, crowds of people in city centres etc.
- Restricted viewing angles in comparison to the Dome style.
- There are obviously better options for more covert surveillance and monitoring applications.
Dome
- So called because of the dome shaped casing that protects the internal camera.
- Very popular due to their robust design and versatility.
- Discreet/unobtrusive – usually fixed on ceilings.
- The Dome casing makes it difficult for someone to determine which way the camera is facing. This creates an uncertainty that serves well as a deterrent.
- Protects against tampering and vandalism.
- If the casing was ever compromised it could cause moisture ingress and misting. Glare might also be a problem in certain environments. (This is much less of an issue with the HIK Domes which have an IP67 Rating).
- A popular choice in commercial situations. Often seen in public spaces, retail outlets, schools, offices, public transport etc
Turret
- Indoor or Outdoor
- The Turret is essentially a form of Dome and shares many of its attributes.
- Is often referred to as an ‘eyeball’ with its ball and socket design offering easy adjustment of the viewing angle.
- There is no glass housing, which has certain advantages and disadvantages.
- The main disadvantage is that the camera is more susceptible to tampering or vandalism.
- However, on the flip side the lack of the glass housing has the benefit of making the unit less susceptible to misting and glare.
- Turrets generally start at a lower price point. Therefore, if you are looking to install a lower budget or home security system or perhaps a similar situation where vandalism isn’t a major concern, the Turret would be a solid choice.
PTZ – Pan, Tilt, Zoom
PTZ cameras are fitted with internal motors and operated remotely. They can be swivelled left or right, tilted up and down. They are also able to quickly zoom in and out of a scene. They are commonly implemented in situations where there is a requirement to monitor large wide open areas with a 180 or 360 degree view such as shopping centres, public venues, car parks etc. There will usually be additional features available which will be dependent on the make and model of camera.
For example, HIKvision PTZ cameras enable features that enable views from any given angle, for any given detail and at any given moment with a single camera.
Any Angle
- Pan & Tilt – Left/Right, Up/Down 360 degrees
- Auto Tracking – Automatically track preset types of objects
- Panoramic Views – Via image stitching of TandemVu PTZ’s
Every Detail
- Close Up Views – Zoom in from extended distances
- AI Analytics – Extract objects and features accurately
- Smart Linkage – Between various lenses of TandemVU PTZs to track objects and details
