Broadly speaking, there are two types of tests you can do to check that your smoke detector is functioning properly.
- Functional Testing is achieved by exposing the sensor in the detector to a source of smoke. Smoke detector testers can be used to produce simulated smoke safely and easily. This method is also known as Operational Testing, it is the most widely accepted method for testing and is a requirement around the world.
- Sensitivity Testing is used to check if a detector is functioning within it’s set parameters. It can be done electronically, however most countries require a test to be conducted using smoke or simulated smoke. This method is also known as Calibration Testing.
